Halcrow MWT has an on-going research programme into travel behaviour, covering the following particular issues:
- variability of mode choice across Sydney and locational factors related to mode choice
- identification of the effect of parking restraint in the CBD on peak period commuter behaviour
- estimates of modal interchange penalties from revealed preference data
- sensitivity testing of behavioural parameters
- out-of-pocket demand elasticity for cars
- peak spreading
- behaviour within bottlenecks on high service flow roads within the Sydney network
- a trial methodology of small-area transport studies, currently under development
- the link between the international integration of the Australian economy, travel demand and provision of transport infrastructure.
To support personal travel behaviour research, Halcrow MWT has developed a method to estimate detailed travel cost data to better capture the actual costs, especially network access costs, faced by users of on-road transit. Recent projects have investigated relative costs of different transit modes in order to identify how travellers might choose under different future service specifications.
