Sydney City Cycleways

Halcrow MWT was commissioned by the City of Sydney and the Roads and Traffic Authority of NSW (RTA) to undertake Paramics micro-simulation modelling of the City's proposed cycleways in the CBD precinct. The purpose of the model was to assess the traffic impacts of the proposals in conjunction with various intersection upgrades. The proposed cycleway facilities include separated bicycle only lanes alongside general traffic, bicycle only signal phases and pedestrian scramble phases.

The model used the SCATSim plugin to model the effect of the SCATS system. SCATS controls the operation of the traffic signals in Sydney by varying signal operation in response to real-time traffic demand. The SCATSim plugin allows this signal variation to modelled in Paramics, rather than modelling fixed time signal operation. Buses and pedestrians, both critical factors in the CBD, were also modelled using various plugins.

The model allowed testing of the various cycleway schemes to determine the impacts on vehicles, pedestrians and buses.
