The Roads and Traffic Authority of New South Wales engaged Halcrow MWT to develop a model that would simulate the real-time operation of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Sydney Harbour Tunnel. The model included the traffic control systems used on the bridge and in the tunnel including tidal flow, lane closures and the various tolling methods used for the harbour crossings.
The model was used to test different toll collection strategies relating to the uptake of electronic tolling and the arrangement of manual and automatic cash payment toll booths and their implications on capacity.
The tools in the Paramics microsimulation package were not sufficient to adequately model the system in enough detail. Halcrow MWT developed custom plug-ins which enhanced Paramics’ functionality to allow assessment of a large number of complex network and demand scenarios.
